Winter Sports Update

-and NOW from our SPORTS DESK - VP & Athletic Director Mike Papenberg reports:           Happy Monday Morning Everyone!  I hope you all enjoyed another big Eagles victory over the weekend!  Here is a look at how our student-athletes performed last week:

The Wrestling Team had a 1-2 week with their dual meets.  The boys defeated Salem High School on Monday, 63-0.  Victor Martin picked up a win on the mat.  The wrestling team travelled to Lenape High School for the Burlington County Open on Friday and Saturday.  Trevor Young was the #2 seed and went undefeated winning the County Championship for the 2nd consecutive year.  Trevor won the 113 pound weight class.  Congrats Trevor!

The Girls Basketball Team had a 2-1 week.  The girls opened the week with a huge 1st place showdown with New Egypt High School.  After a slow start the girls were able to fight back and win the game in the end with a score of 33-31.  Cadence Anderson led the scoring with 10 points while Lauren Gilmore added 9 points and 9 rebounds.  The girls lost to a very good BCIT Medford team on Wednesday, 57-36.  Cadence Anderson had 15 while Amanda Gilmore added 14 points and 9 rebounds.  The girls finished out their week with a 64-15 demolishing of Florence.  Cadence Anderson erupted for 25 points while Lauren Gilmore had 10 points and 8 rebounds.  The girls return to play today at Northern Burlington High School.  The girls enter the week with a record of 13-4. 

The Boys Basketball Team also had a 2-1 week.  The boys opened their week with a 57-48 win over Riverside on Monday.  Kwinten Ives led the Panthers with 23 points and 14 rebounds while Jase Jennings added 13 points.  The Panthers followed that win with a big divisional win against New Egypt on Thursday, 48-25.  Kwinten Ives had 17 points and 14 rebounds while Richie Butler added 16 points for the Panthers.  The Panthers finished off the week with a Saturday game against Woodbury but fell to the Thundering Herd 64-47. Kwinten Ives finished with 17 points and Jaykob Ott had 12.  The Panthers are now 6-9 on the season and will return to play against KIPP Charter School today at 5:15pm in the PHS Gym.

Congratulations to the Winter Track and Field Team to for their excellent performances at Monday’s South Jersey Track Coaches Meet in Toms River. The following athletes placed in the top ten at the meet.

  • Abdul Iyiola placed 7th in the 400 and 6th in the 55 High Hurdles.
  • Joe Russell placed 5th in the High Jump and 9th in the Pole Vault.
  • Joe Barben placed 10th in the shot put.
  • The boys relay of Joe Russell, Abdul Iyiola, Pat Broadbelt and Luke Cannuli placed 10th.

On Tuesday the boys and girls throwers competed against the top throwing schools in South Jersey.  

  • Jon McDonald and Shaun Edmonds threw a personal best.
  • Sidney Lim placed 3rd in the girls freshman competition and threw a personal best. This is the 2nd medal of the year for Sidney.

The Middle School Girls Basketball Team went 2-1 on the week. Their record is now 9-3 which is proving to be a terrific season.  The girls had a convincing win over Riverside with the score 27-12. The girls played great defense.  Ava Sims had 14 points.  Gianna Guglielmucci chipped in with 6 points.  Mailee Kahana also had a big game defensively and grabbing rebounds. The girls then defeated Life Center Academy in a very exciting game. They kept their composure & showed very good sportsmanship! The girls had a balance attack on offense.  Az-Zahra Pollard had 15 points, Mailee Kahana had 6 points, Kaitlin Ashe had 4 points, Gianna Guglielmucci had a great defensive game and scored at the right time.  Ava Sims had 23 points.  The final score was 50-20, Panthers.  The girls finished with a game against Florence on Friday and came away with a tough loss that went down to the wire.  The score was 27-24.  The girls played very hard & hustled to the end.  Maddie Grimes came in and gave a spark off the bench and played great defense.  Olivia Lynch helped with the defense assignments as well.  Ava Sims led all scorers with 13 points.

The Middle School Boys Basketball Team defeated Riverside on Monday.  Excellent team defense led to a 31-16 win.  Zacharius Michele led scoring with 7 points. The boys suffered a tough loss to Life Center Thursday 58-36. An outstanding team effort got the Panthers within 5 late in 3rd quarter. Jahmeer Latimore led the scoring with 13 points and Jayden Boone had 12. The boys then beat Florence on Friday led by another team effort.  Jayden Boone led scoring with 15 and Justin Butler added 12.  The boys will return to action tomorrow against Riverside.

The Middle School Wrestling Team won 10 of 16 matches against New Egypt in their lone match last week.  Logan Jander, Shane Mulherin, Rafael Gonzalez, Jose Ruiz, Sam Major, Levi Jander, Meghan Austin, Chase Moritz, Burak Sayin and Nick Rex picked up wins.
