-and NOW from our SPORTS DESK - Athletic Director Mike Papenberg reports: Good Morning Everyone, I hope you enjoyed your 3 day weekend and some snow on Saturday! We will be concluding our winter season over the next week and a half as we begin to prepare for warmer temperatures and Spring Sports! We will host a Girls and Boys Basketball Playoff double header on Thursday with the girls playing at 4PM and the boys playing at 6PM. Come out and support both programs! Here is a look at how our teams competed last week:
The Girls Basketball Team went 2-1 and clinched a share of the BCSL Patriot Division Championship! The girls opened the week with a 55-29 win over Moorestown Friends. Angie Sauls led the scoring with 16 points while Cadence Anderson added 14 points and 11 rebounds. The girls lost a close one to Holy Cross on Thursday, 49-43. Cadence Anderson led all scorers with 25 points in the loss. The girls then clinched a share of the BCSL Patriot Division Championship by defeating New Egypt High School yesterday, 33-17. Cadence Anderson outscored the Warriors all by herself, netting 21 points. The girls completed the regular season with a record of 16-7. They will host Penns Grove High School on Thursday at 4PM in the 1st round of the NJSIAA Playoffs.
The Boys Basketball Team won their lone game of the week, beating Group 2 Haddon Heights 59-43 on Thursday. Azmir Taylor led the offense with 15 points. John Latimore(12 points)and Da’Shon Edmonds(11 points) also scored in double figures. The boys wrap up their regular season today with a BCSL Independence Division Game against New Egypt High School at home at 530PM. The boys are currently 13-8 and will also host a 1st Round NJSIAA Playoff Game on Thursday at 6PM against Paulsboro.
The Wrestling Team competed at the District 26 Championships at Rancocas Valley Regional High School. Congrats to Aidan Hines who finished on the podium at 138 pounds in 3rd place. He will represent PHS at the Region 7 Tournament this Friday at Lenape. Seniors Trevor Young and Patrick Daly finished in 4th place just missing out on the podium. Congrats on a great season for the Panthers who finished with a 16-11 dual match record.
The Winter Track & Field Teams traveled to Toms River on Monday for a SJTCA meet. The following athletes placed in the top 20 in their event.
· Madison Grimes placed 14th in the 55 meter dash
- Maura Russell placed 6th in the 400 meter dash
- Madison Grimes 15th in the 55 hurdles
- Meli Martinez 17th in the 55 hurdles
- Phoenix Leaks 7th in the shot put
- Sarah Agnew, Maura Russell, Natalie Sherrill, Keronja Watson placed 7th in the Sprint Medley
for the Boys:
- Patrick Broadbelt 9th in the 800
- Jimmy Crean 14th in 3200
- Abdul Iyiola 6th in the 55 hurdles
- Charles Rosica 20th in the 55 hurdles
- Shaun Edmonds 13th in the shot put
- Marcus Grimes, Jonathan Bunch, Charles Rosica, Pat Broadbelt 7th in the Sprint Medley
Medalists from the meet included:
- Joe Barben 2nd in the Shot Put
- Keronja Watson 2nd in 55 Hurdles
- Abdul Iyiola was 1st in the 400 meter dash and set a school record beating Kelvin Harmon’s record. Abdul’s time was ranked as an elite time by NJ Mile Split and is 1 second off qualifying for nationals!
The track and field teams then traveled to Toms River for the NJSIAA Group1 State Championships on Saturday.
- Alex Lopez placed 24th in Group 1 in the pole vault.
- Colin Broadbelt placed 16th in Group 1 in the 800-meter dash and ran his fastest time of the year.
- Abdul Iyiola won a 4th place medal in the 400-meter dash and a 6th place medal in the 55 hurdles.
The indoor track and field team will travel to Toms River for their final indoor meet of the season today. Good Luck!
